The prediction triad

  1. Grammar: what fits the gap
    • Noun, verb, adjective, number, date, name
  2. Meaning: what type of thing
    • price, room name, reason, effect, location
  3. Format: how it will look
    • digits, currency, hyphenated word, letter code

  • ↺ correction or change of plan
  • ≈ similar meaning or paraphrase

  • N, V, Adj, Num for part of speech

20 minute routine

  1. Preview and predict 4 min
    • Underline key nouns in stems
    • Write POS under each gap N or Num or Adj
    • Add likely units or forms km, kg, %, email, code
    • Pre write 1 or 2 paraphrases for each target cheap → affordable
  2. Active capture 9 min
    • Listen for cue words first, then fill
    • Write anchors only numbers, names, final verbs
    • Use ≈ to tag paraphrases you hear
    • Mark ↺ the moment you hear actually or instead
  3. Quick checkback 5 min
    • Fit answer to grammar and format
    • If two fit, choose the one that matches the last verb or limiter mainly, at least
    • Cross ✖ anything that breaks the unit or time window
  4. One line reflect 2 min
    • Note one fix per error POS, unit, limiter or ownership

Prediction packs by section

Section 1 forms

  • POS: many Num, Name, Noun
  • Format: phone, postcode, time 9.30, price 12.50
  • Units: days, weeks, months, percent, dollars
  • Traps: spelling, 15 vs 50, correction phrases

Section 2 maps or guides

  • POS: place names, facilities, directions
  • Format: label words hall, kiosk, gallery
  • Traps: left or right depends on facing, next to vs opposite

Section 3 discussions

  • POS: concepts, reasons, recommendations
  • Format: short noun phrases, verbs in base form
  • Traps: hedges mostly, tends to, final decision vs first idea

Section 4 lecture

  • POS: academic nouns, processes, causes, results
  • Format: singular vs plural, uncountable nouns
  • Traps: examples vs main point, superlatives, time windows

Fast grammar checks

  • Article needed a, an, the
  • Countability many vs much
  • Singular or plural matches verb
  • Adjective position before noun or after be
  • Proper noun needs capital

Limiter cue list to catch

about, around, nearly, at least, up to, no more than, mainly, generally, rarely, from, until, by, before, after

Paraphrase map for quick prediction

  • increase → rise, go up, boost
  • decrease → drop, fall, reduce
  • cheap → low cost, affordable
  • expensive → costly, high priced
  • problem → issue, concern, drawback
  • benefit → advantage, upside
  • recommend → suggest, advise

Write 10 mixed stems. Tag POS in 60 seconds. Check.
B. Unit hunt
Listen to 60 seconds of any clip. Jot only units and numbers.
C. Limiter race
Play a short dialog. Every limiter you hear, tap table once and write it.
D. Paraphrase bingo
Pick 6 common words. Score a point when the clip uses a synonym.
