Why these tasks matter

Form, table, and note completion test your ability to find small details quickly. Most marks are for names, numbers, times, places, and short facts. Strong technique here lifts your band even if your grammar is basic.

The 3 task types at a glance

  • Form completion: personal details, contact info, bookings.
  • Table completion: compare items by price, time, features.
  • Note completion: main points from a short talk or tour.

Decode the instructions first

  • Word limit: one word only, two words, or one word and/or a number. Never write extra words.
  • Source rules: use words from the recording only. Do not paraphrase unless allowed.
  • Spelling: must be correct. Proper nouns start with capitals.
  • Units: write the unit if you hear it and if the space suggests it, for example 12 km.

Fast targeting method

  1. Box the clues: underline keywords near each gap.
  2. Predict type: name, number, date, noun, adjective.
  3. Listen for signals: verbs like costs, opens, located, offered.
  4. Write once: keep it short, clear, and inside the word limit.
  5. Move on: do not miss the next answer while fixing the last one.

Common traps and fixes

  • Spelling variants: center vs centre, program vs programme. Copy what you hear in IELTS accents, usually British forms.
  • Numbers: teen vs ty, zero vs oh.
  • Corrections mid sentence: You will hear self correction like sorry, that should be. Replace the old data.
  • Synonyms around the gap: the talk may paraphrase the question. Match meaning, not only words.

Useful abbreviations you can safely copy

  • Avenue → Ave, Street → St, Road → Rd, Department → Dept, approximately → approx, minutes → mins, kilograms → kg, kilometers → km. Write what you hear if clearly used.
